Munster Cricket Spring Update

Welcome to the Munster Cricket Spring Newsletter which we hope you find interesting and informative.  With the weather finally starting to improve, we can start to look forward to a busy and competitive cricket season.

2016 Cricket Season

League and cup fixtures for 2016 have been completed and all details can be accessed on CricHQ.  Player gradings have also been completed for the start of the season and the committee will review and update these as the season progresses.

We would like to welcome North Kerry and Co Tipperary 2 to Division 2 and are pleased to see Lismore and Waterford & District return to play in the Minor Cup.  Hopefully, we will see them back in league competition in the near future.  We are also delighted that Limerick CC will field three teams in league cricket this year.

As part of our rebranding exercise, the league competitions from 2016 will be titled

The cricket committee for 2016 consists of the following:

  • Gerard O’Sullivan – Chairperson
  • Joe O’Mahony – Fixtures Secretary
  • Richard Rutland
  • Dave McDonnell
  • John Ketch
  • Chris Thomas – Youth Coordinator

Cricket ball supply

For 2016, we have entered into an agreement to source the supply of balls through the North West Cricket Union which we believe will be the most cost effective route.  Please contact Ger O’Sullivan to order your supply of red and pink balls for this season’s competition.  Clubs with stocks of balls remaining from last year can also use these balls in this year’s competitions.

Umpiring and Scoring

A Level 1 umpiring course has been arranged to take place on 10 and 17 April next.  This course is fully subscribed so please contact Gerard O’Sullivan if you wish to go on a waiting list in case a booking is cancelled.

Ger and Kevin O’Sullivan have also agreed to run a number of scoring workshops.  If you would like to run one in your club, please contact Ger to make the arrangements.

Youth cricket

Preparations continue for the U13 squad which will participate in the Interprovincial competition this year.  The tournament will take place in the North West area from 4 to 6 July.

We also hope for a strong representation on the Southern XI in the U15 Interprovincial competition which will take place in the NCU area from 29 June to 1 July.

Kingsley Jones is well advanced in the organisation of fixtures for the Munster U15s who will play in the Leinster U15s A league this summer having won the B Division in 2015.  Munster U15s will also play their annual challenge games with Leinster in early August.

Finally, we are pleased to note that the Mardyke will host five games between Ireland and Scotland U15s from 7th to 12th August.

Munster Reds

The Munster Reds will play fixtures with MCC on 30th May – the annual development fixture – and again on 24th and 26th August to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Munster Cricket Union.  We also hope to play fixtures with Leinster Lightning and Northern Knights Development sides– watch the website for further information on this.

The website upgrade and rebranding exercise is up and running and the Union has appointed Granite Digital – a Cork based firm – to carry out this exercise.  We expect that the new website will be operational by May of this year.  Munster Cricket wish to acknowledge the assistance of Cricket Ireland in getting this project underway as the costs are funded from the T20 World Cup Qualifier hosting fee and thus will not impact on our budget for 2016 activity.  Our PRO, Robert Duggan, is seeking photos and other archive information to include in the new site – please contact him if you think you have some interesting material.

Club Accreditation

Successful and well attended club accreditation meetings were held on 1st and 2nd March in Cork and Limerick.  Munster Cricket would like to thank Tim Simmonite of Cricket Ireland for his efforts in making these evenings very informative.  Clubs are now asked to submit to David Griffin the contact details of their liaison person for the accreditation process.  We hope to have the first batch of accreditations completed by October 2016.

Details of the presentation made to the clubs and the accreditation document for completion can be found on the MCU website.

Disciplinary committee

Following the AGM, the executive has received the following nominations to the disciplinary panel:

David McDonnell Midleton
John Power Cork County
Jack Filan Cork Harlequins
Fintan Moore Co Tipperary
Gay Lawlor Limerick
Dave Latimor Waterford & District

If the remaining clubs wish to nominate a member to the panel, please contact David Griffin as soon as possible.  The executive will appoint a disciplinary chairperson prior to the start of the season.

Coach Education

A Level 2 coaching course got underway on 6th March with eleven candidates from Cork County, Co Kerry, Cork Harlequins, Waterford & District and Limerick.  We wish all the candidates success in this very demanding course.  We plan to run a number of introductory courses during the summer aimed at players and parents who would like to assist with coaching of youth members.  Please contact Jim Doran for details regarding courses in your area.

We intend that this newsletter will be a regular feature as the season progresses.

Best wishes to all clubs in 2016.
