Former Munster and Cork County batsman Johnny Walsh passed away last Saturday but is fondly remembered at the Mardyke and throughout the Munster and Irish cricketing circles.
Johnny Walsh came to Cork County in 1980 from Old Belvedere with a reputation of being a good middle order Batsman and a superb Fielder. He made a flamboyant hundred on debut in the Munster Senior League and was a consistent run scorer for nearly a decade in local Cricket.
This saw him selected for Munster in the old Guinness Cup and he was a part of the team that came second in 1982, our highest ever placing. After his return to Dublin in 1988 he was still a regular and popular visitor to the Mardyke with his brother Paddy turning out for the Irish Times Taverners team. He had been ill for the last few years but typically it was borne with great humour.
